Fatty Fat Fat
Background
Last year was a great year for me on the water. At the end of the season I weighed in at 203 lbs, almost 10 pounds lighter than the year before. In our sport being lighter has it's advantages, like skiing at slower speeds, and having less drag which equals less work. Having a better strength to weight ratio may also help prevent injury ref. So who wouldn't like to be lighter or at their ideal weight ? But what is ideal for you, and how do you get there ? We as a culture are getting fat (66 % of Americans are over weight or obese ). The basic principles of weight loss are very, very simple; burn more calories than you eat. End of story right ?
Weight loss in America was a 46.3 billion dollar a year industry in 2004 and forecast to reach $61 billion by 2008 . We are constantly bombarded with advertising to eat. The more we eat the more money the food industry makes (we are a consumer based economy). Super size, king size, mega size, all for just a few extra cents. No wonder we're fat. I'll leave the rest for another article, but I'm sure you get the gist.
"Fat" forward to December 2008
I had enjoyed the fall thoroughly, drinking home brew, eating fast food, and I didn't hit the gym. As a commercial airline pilot, I am required to take an FAA physical twice a year. The doctor weighed me in at a portly 224, ughhhh. I was closer to my fattest all time weight of 239, than my end of season 203. How do you gain 21 pounds in 16 weeks? Easy, just eat more than you burn. Some basic math and you can see just how that happened.
1lb of fat = 3500 calories
21lbs = 73,500 calories
So I had a 4594 calorie surplus a week. That sounds like a lot doesn't it ? But if you break it down that's only 656 calories a day surplus. Skiing was burning a lot of my excess intake, I figure at least 500 a day. When I got back to work I was sitting in an airplane for 8 plus hours (considered sedentary) and having to eat out everyday. Even by eating less I was still in surplus due to my lack of exercise.
What's approximately 600 calories ?
1 Quarter pounder with cheese
4.5 Ounces of Doritos
1 Large Fry
3.5 Ounces of peanuts
3.5 Ounces of almonds
1 Peanut butter sandwich
24 Ounces chocolate milk
4 Red Bulls
3 Monster Drinks
6 Miller lites
4 Regular beers
3 Micro brews

The Plan
After my medical in December, I got onboard the latest fad, "The low glycemic index diet". Similar to the Atkins, it aims to lower your insulin. But after you've lost the weight you go back to eating the way you did before and back comes the weight. Your body needs carbs for energy and brain function. So what now ? I called my long time friend and owner of Pleasant Valley Fitness Tony Chemer.
Tony told me he had just the solution, and he would set me up with the bodybugg® program. Tony explains " We've had tremendous results with our clients using the the bodybugg®, it's easy; eat what ever you want (just not as much as you want), make sure you have a calorie deficit every week and you'll lose weight." How much weight is up to you.
Tony asked me my goals and set me up with a plan. I had to weigh in and have my body fat measured (214 lbs and 18% body fat). My goal was to get to 195 lbs and 10% body fat, an aggressive goal. I tend to be very goal oriented, like mastering only one of the 3 barefoot events a year. Seeing my goal on the computer with a graph was all that was needed to motivate me. One of the coolest things about this program is seeing your calorie's burned and calories consumed at anytime. Simply log on, push a button on the bodybugg®, and it downloads the data wirelessly. Also, while on line you input what you ate and it calculates how many calories you have consumed.
Tony set my goal to burn 2900 calories daily, and to eat 2150 for a 750 calorie a day deficit. That should be a 1.5 lb a week loss. However, I could eat more if I burned more, so off I went (see the training section). On some days I was able to burn almost 4000 calories which gave me 3250 to eat ! Other days, like at work I really had to watch what I put into my body. The bodybugg® gave me some remarkable insight into where I could improve my diet and what activities really did burn more calories. For example ; I found out that just 2 tbsp of salad dressing is 200 calories (that's 2 Miller lites). Have you ever tried to eat just 2 tbsp of salad dressing ? Another interesting fact that I had a hard time believing, was that a 1 hour walk at a brisk pace burns as many calories as a 1 hour workout in the gym. So now I walk.... a lot.
As of this writing (10 weeks into the program) I've seen 1 9 9 on the scale something I hadn't seen in 11 years. This program is simply awesome ! I have never been on a diet before that let me eat chocolate cake, and drink beer. That's the beauty, it's not a diet. You just adjust you intake in accordance with your burn. During our spring break training ,I dropped my forward barefoot waterski speed by 4 MPH!
After 10 weeks my body has changed tremendously, heck I look just like Tony Chemer now (check out the picture below).
